Here are the main types of keys:
Traditional Key
This is the most basic type of key. It is a piece of metal cut with precision to fit the lock. These are usually on older model cars and don’t include any electronics or software encoding. A standard key blank and precision machinery will make such a key and they usually cost less than $10.

Switchblade Key
A switchblade key is a type of key that is foldable. The “blade” of the key is housed in the handle and there is usually a button to pop the key out for use. Commonly, these keys can also have a transponder function embedded into the handle which can also double as a remote or alarm.
Transponder Key
These keys look like the traditional keys with a larger key handle. This is because there is a microchip embedded there which makes it more secure than the traditional key. These transponder keys are paired with a sensor that allows the engine to be started.
There are also more advanced transponders that use a rolling code. These codes use complex calculations or codes such as the vehicle serial number, also known as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), to generate codes. These codes in a rolling code transponder changes with every use making it much more secure than a standard transponder. Duplication technology is used here is most complex.
The key alone may unlock the doors but without the transponder, your car won’t be going anywhere. The additional security for your car will cost a lot more and dealerships will charge hundreds of dollars for a replacement or a spare.

Smart Key
These are the most high-tech of keys. It works just by being near the car and disables to immobilizer and enables unlocking and ignition just by proximity. These keys can be kept in a pocket or bag and do not need to be touched in order to open your car door or to start the engine.
Some vehicles also automatically adjust its interior settings based on the key as well, enabling drivers to personalize the seat position, mirror angles, climate control, and other settings to each key.
Most smart keys also house a manual key that can be used in emergencies if the battery fails. Due to the technology and security features in smart keys there are the most expensive to replace.
Car Alarm
If you have a car alarm, this is usually independent from the in-car audio entertainment system. There is usually a separate device located in the engine bay that creates the sound and the lock/unlock mechanism can be linked to your car’s central locking.
In this case, you can replace the keys without affecting your alarm system as well.

Custom Design
To personalize your car key you may wish to customize your key or key fob. Similar to how we like to use keychains to tell which set of keys are for which doors, a personalized key fob can differentiate your car key from others.
This works especially if you leave your keys at a friend’s or relative’s place, or if you fear mixing your keys with others at a valet service.
You can also choose your own color and design preference.
Authorized & Experienced Locksmith
As an authorised car key locksmith, we are experienced with most car models, alarms, and security systems.
All-in-all, as a preventive measure, it is usually less costly to duplicate additional car keys before it is lost or damaged. In some rare cases, the entyre car locking system and security system needs to be replaced. This happens when the device is impaired and the signal is distorted or cannot be read by the security system.
